Treat"

Los Angeles is pleased to present “Dutch Treat”, an exhibition of paintings
by Berlin based American Jonathan Kroll. For this, Kroll's second exhibition
with the gallery, the artist presents a selection of paintings that
include portraiture, still life, paintings based on their own support,
two paintings that reference what once was a Rembrandt, and a number
of works related to a Dutch boy pop act. (Scroll down for images)
The
exhibition is anchored, in part, by two paintings created from the
front and back of a 60cm square promotional pillow that originally
featured four fresh-faced Dutch youths on one side and the name of
their singing group, Caught In The Act, repeated in a pattern on the
other. Kroll has split the pillow and stretched each side over support
bars. On top of the faces of the "band"
photo side, Kroll has painted black gesso, leaving one feature (and eye from
one member, a nose from another...) from each of the four faces, leaving a
single face worth of features made from the original four people. The yellow-
with-blue-text back of the pillow was stretched and the band's logo, a curious
person shape made from the letters C.I.T.A., painted out with matching yellow
paint, while the repeated text, "Caught In The Act", is left to handle
the compo- sition duties without the figurative help. These two paintings
face each other in the space. Related to these two pillowcase
paintings are four small pieces each featuring a lavender field on which
one feature from each band member is painted by the artist, making for
combination faces. These four paintings are a kind of leitmotif for the
exhibition as one moves through the room.
Two
other paintings reference the Netherlands; both are taken from a photograph
of a friend who is posed like the subject in, what was until recently
Rembrandt's, "The Man With
the Golden Helmet". The subject wears an aluminum foil helmet
and the canvas is sized like its referent which lives in the
Gemäldegalerie, Berlin. The paintings are, in general, the same,
with the background field of one left unfinished.
Other paintings in the show hold up their end of the
"Dutch Treat", paying their own way, in a sense, as stand alone
works: a still life of a pretzel, a still life with the objects painted
out leaving only the cloth they were once upon, canvas scraps sewn together
supporting a checkerboard painting and a painting of an unstretched pillowcase
painted on the pillowcase after it was stretched.
