Los Angeles is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings and collage
by Keith Holbrook.
This exhibition,
Holbrook's second at the gallery, features several different approaches
to the use of found material: in tall collage pieces, created from
gallery advertisements from art magazines, each piece of raw material
is a title of an advertised exhibition, the combining of which reflects
Holbrook’s interest in the L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E group of poets, two
stripe paintings - one black and one white - created from strips of
advertisements that feature versions of the phrases "new paintings", "recent
paintings" etc., and a group of small square paintings that represent
advertisements for Holbrook's show at the gallery (with dates and contact
information). Each of these paintings, there are five different versions,
has a different background and text color.
Paper
collage images are set into the four larger abstract paintings included
in the exhibition. These collage pieces are recognizable art images (artists
or works) that can be seen as making a sense within the painting (matching
a painted color or turning a gestural shape into a surface for the
collage element to stand upon) while seeming quite outside of the space
or world created by the surface and the paint. In addition there is a
sculpture that is suspended from the ceiling. A 65 inch long string that
has been dipped repeatedly in paint, so that it has grown to be wider in
diameter near the bottom than at the top, has horizontal stripes painted
upon it. This piece is entitled “Attempt To Produce The Entire Oeuvre
Of Andre Cadere In Hand-dipped Paint”.
