The
title “Groundwork” was chosen by Jamieson in as much
of a response to the work by these artists as it was a starting off point,
or suggestion of approach, for a piece of new work. Most, but not all,
of the work in the exhibition sits on the gallery floor. Mai Braun’s
sculptures are created from cardboard boxes that have been modified
and transformed. These rest on the floor. Rupert Deese’s monochromatic
paintings are based on the drainage and runoff of Milly’s Pass,
which, at 12,240' in elevation, is a cross country route across the
Kings-Kern Divide in the Sierra mountains of Caliornia. It connects
the head waters of the Kern to Lake Reflection. These paintings are
built with plywood triangles that follow the elevations within the
paintings and create the value differences seen in the photographs.
Deese’s
work is painted with oil and is not on the ground, it is about it. Barry
Frantz, who has been creating work since 1964 presents sculptures that
combine man-made patterns (bricks) and natural forms (sticks). These
works are on the floor but touches the wall as well. Jeff Jamieson’s
larger scale, hollow, wooden, “snowman” sculpture moves from
the wall down to the floor as it grows in size. Dave Prochaska’s
Hydra-cal/plaster pieces are of human internal organs. They are painted
with wash and ink and will be on the floor as well as a wall.
In addition
to the visual work, the reception for the artists featured several
short performances by Jameson Swanagon, a guitarist based in Los Angeles.

Braun lives and works in Frankfurt, Germany. She will be part of a group
exhibition, “Shit”,
